Your planning range
$7,200–$13,600
This is a preliminary planning estimate, not a proposal or contract. Final pricing comes from a site visit.
Your selected scope
- Paver patio or driveway400 sq ft$7,200–$13,600
What's moving your number
- Pavers surface — Base depth, cuts, edge restraint and joint sand add labor over plain concrete.
Recommended next steps
- Measure the finished surface — length × width, in feet.
- Photograph the access route from the street or driveway to the work area.
- Note where water currently sits or drains after a hard rain.
- Book a free walkthrough so we can confirm base depth, drainage and layout on site.
How this calculator works
Each surface carries an installed range — material, base, labor and cleanup — taken from the same published pricing we use on our San Diego landscape cost calculator. Your square footage multiplies that range, then three site factors adjust the result: access, soil and finish level. Where we do not publish a range for something you selected, the line stays in your scope and we price it at the walkthrough rather than showing a number we cannot stand behind.
What actually moves a San Diego patio price
- Access. Coastal lots in Point Loma, Sunset Cliffs and La Jolla frequently have stairs and no gate wide enough for equipment. Everything gets carried.
- Soil. Expansive clay through Chula Vista and the inland valleys wants a deeper base section. Rock and hardpan in La Mesa, Mount Helix and Poway slow excavation down.
- Grade. A sloped yard needs cutting, holding and draining before a flat surface can exist at all.
- Detail. Curves, borders, banding, level changes and inset lighting all add layout time and material waste.

Patio cost questions
- How much does a patio cost in San Diego?
- It depends on surface and site. Our published installed ranges are $12–$26 per square foot for concrete flatwork, $18–$34 for pavers and $26–$48 for flagstone, before access, soil and finish adjustments. A 400 square foot paver patio typically lands between $7,200 and $13,600 before those factors.
- Why does the same patio cost more at one house than another?
- Access first. If material has to be wheelbarrowed through a 3-foot gate or hand-carried down stairs, labor hours climb on every phase of the job. After that: soil that needs a deeper base or rock excavation, grade changes, and how much cutting and detailing the layout demands.
- Is demolition included in a patio price?
- Not automatically. Removing an existing slab, lawn or old hardscape runs $3–$9 per square foot depending on thickness, reinforcement and how far the debris has to travel to the truck. Add it in the calculator if you have an existing surface.
- Do I need drainage under a new patio?
- Often, yes. Any new impervious surface changes where water goes. Where a patio sits below grade, traps runoff against a house or replaces a lawn that used to absorb rain, we budget drainage — $28–$65 per linear foot for basins, solid pipe and a legal discharge point.
- Are pavers or concrete better in San Diego?
- Concrete costs less up front and gives you an unbroken surface. Pavers cost more but flex with soil movement, are repairable panel by panel, and are permeable in the right setup. We install both — the choice usually comes down to budget, soil and how the patio should read next to the house.
- Is this calculator a quote?
- No. It is a planning range built from typical San Diego installed costs. A real number requires a site visit — grade, drainage, access and soil cannot be estimated from a screen.
