Hydrostatic pressure behind a wall is the usual cause of failure. Every wall we build gets drain rock, filter fabric and a functioning outlet so water leaves instead of pushing.
When engineering is required
Walls above the height threshold, walls holding a slope, or walls supporting a structure need engineered plans and permits. We handle that coordination rather than building to the edge of what is allowed without it.

Common questions
- When does a retaining wall need engineering?
- Generally over three feet measured from the bottom of the footing, and at any height when the wall carries a slope, driveway or structure above it. Engineered plans are part of our scope when required.
- Block wall or poured concrete?
- Segmental block is faster, more forgiving of minor movement and easy to face with veneer. Poured concrete makes sense for tall walls, tight geometry or where the structural design demands it.
- Why do retaining walls lean?
- Water. Without drain rock, filter fabric and an outlet, hydrostatic pressure builds behind the wall and pushes it over. Every wall we build gets a full drainage system behind it.
- Are you licensed for retaining wall work in San Diego?
- Yes. Staples Landscaping holds California contractor license #1159370, carries liability and workers' compensation coverage, and pulls permits on any work that requires them. You can verify the license directly with the CSLB.
