Cutting Into a Steep La Mesa Slope for Usable Backyard

Slope excavation, engineered retaining wall, drainage system, new level yard pad

Neighborhood

Category

Scope
Hillside retaining wall and slope work

What we were working with

Most of the backyard was a steep, unusable slope. The flat area behind the house was barely deep enough for a table, and runoff came straight down at the foundation every winter.

What we built

We cut into the hill, hauled the spoils, and built an engineered retaining wall with geogrid, gravel backfill and a perforated drain line routed to daylight. Above the wall, the remaining slope was planted for stability.

How it turned out

A full level of new backyard where a hillside used to be, and stormwater that leaves the property instead of pooling at the house.
