A Shade-First Backyard Built for El Cajon Heat

Full backyard

What we were working with

The existing dark concrete patio was too hot to stand on barefoot from June through September, so the family stopped using the yard half the year.

What we built

We replaced it with a light-finish paver surface that runs noticeably cooler, built a cedar shade structure over the dining zone, and planted shade trees positioned for the late-afternoon sun angle. Irrigation was rebuilt with pressure-regulated drip and real hydrozoning.

How it turned out

A backyard that is comfortable in August, with a water bill that went the other direction.
