Butterfly Bliss: A California Native Meadow Front Yard in Hillcrest

Scope
Small front yard

What we were working with

A small, tired front lawn that drank water all summer, was walked on maybe twice a year, and gave the house nothing at the curb.

What we built

We removed the lawn and planted a deliberately loose, overflowing California native meadow — layered heights, seasonal bloom, and a pollinator palette built to pull in butterflies from spring through fall. A stone path weaves through it from the street to the front door so you walk through the garden rather than around it.

How it turned out

A fairytale-feeling front yard that uses a fraction of the water and is genuinely alive with pollinators most of the year.
