Outdoor Kitchens in San Diego: Cost, Layout and What to Skip

3 min read

San Diego weather means an outdoor kitchen actually gets used, which is exactly why it deserves real planning instead of a prefab island parked on a patio.

Budget tiers

Installed, including utilities and masonry:

  • $8k–$15k — grill island: masonry base, stone or tile facing, counter, storage
  • $20k–$40k — working kitchen: grill, side burner, sink, refrigerator, bar seating, lighting
  • $50k+ — full outdoor room: pizza oven, beverage center, shade structure, heaters, sound and full electrical

Utilities decide the location

Gas, water, drainage and electrical runs frequently cost more than the appliances. Locating the kitchen near the house shortens every trench and lets you tie into existing service. Locating it at the back fence for the view can add thousands in trenching alone.

Sinks need a drain solution, and dry wells are not always acceptable — confirm requirements before design is finalized.

Materials and regrets

Countertops: dense granite, porcelain slab and concrete all perform. Marble stains and butcher block dies outdoors. Cabinetry: stainless or masonry with stainless doors; standard indoor cabinetry fails within two seasons.

Most common regrets we hear — an undersized counter next to the grill, no shade over the cook, and appliances chosen before the layout.

Frequently asked

Do outdoor kitchens need permits?
Gas, electrical and plumbing work typically require permits and inspection. The island itself often does not.
Built-in or freestanding grill?
Built-in for permanence and looks; freestanding if you may move or upgrade often.
How much counter space is enough?
Plan at least 24 inches of landing space on each side of the grill, plus a prep zone.
