- Brick staircase and garden walls
What we were working with
A steep front grade handled by railroad ties that had rotted through, with treads at three different heights.
What we built
We removed the ties, poured proper footings, and built a mortared brick staircase with consistent risers, a matching walkway and low brick walls to hold the beds either side.
How it turned out
A safe, code-consistent stair that looks like original 1940s masonry.

Materials & methods
- Mortared clay brick
- Concrete footings
- Brick soldier-course caps
- Gravel drainage backfill
- Drought-tolerant planting
